Trump Attorney: Prosecuting Trump for Jan 6th Not in the “best interests of the country”
When CNN spoke to several attorneys regarding Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony before the Jan. 6th Committee, one of those attorneys was Ty Cobb who represented Trump in the Mueller investigation.
While Cobb believes Trump definitely committed crimes, he doesn’t believe he should be prosecuted for them. From CNN:
“Here there are many damning facts,” said Cobb, who pointed to Hutchinson’s testimony that Trump knew his supporters were armed on January 6, riled them up, then appeared to concur with them chanting to hang the vice president as worthy of prosecutors’ attention. If that “isn’t insurrection, I don’t know what is,” he said Wednesday.
Now, I’m not sure exactly what Mr. Cobb considers enough of a crime to put an ex-President in jail but, I guess this ain’t it:
“I am not convinced prosecuting Trump is in the best interests of the country in the long term”
If anyone EVER deserved jail for the Jan 6th insurrection, it is Donald Trump. Trump began lying to his supporters even before the 2020 election, and to this day has not stopped beating the “stolen election” drum. Elected Republicans echoed the lie. GOP-led states conducted multiple recounts looking for evidence, they found none. Almost two years later many Republicans are still perpetuating these falsehoods. His voting base believed Donald Trump. They answered his call to stop the certification of the election, resulting in the death of one supporter. Trump knew they were committing crimes; he watched it all unfold within the security of the White House.
Perhaps the best evidence that Trump knowingly committed crimes himself? Fox “News” is refusing to air the Jan 6th hearings. Thankfully, many of their viewers are watching the hearings anyway.
What About the Poor Saps that Took Part in the Insurrection?
As for those who foolishly believed Trump and went to the Capitol on Jan 6th, according to Insider:
… at least 874 people have been arrested and charged with crimes. … [Insider also provides] … the names, charges, links to court documents, and links to additional stories of all the people charged so far. We’re keeping it updated as the Department of Justice releases more names and info.
Donald Trump has not visited them or offered to help pay for attorneys for them. Why should his voters pay for this crime against America but not Donald Trump himself? Trump has gotten away with mowing down “the little guy” his entire life. He even allegedly insulted his supporters as they rioted in the Capitol:
Trump is quoted as having said: “This looks terrible. This is really bad. Who are these people? These aren’t our people, these idiots with these outfits…”
Trump is also reported to have referred to his supporters as “the great unwashed”…
Trump is Not the Only One Who Should Face the Consequences
This insurrection was fueled by a GOP Congress that cut its own backbone out for Donald Trump to mount on his wall. They remain silent to this dayon perhaps the greatest assault on our democracy They do not deserve to be anywhere near government.
